For shows hosted on Dovetail there are a few extra steps we need to take with Spotify specifically to ensure that passthrough compliance is enabled for your show.
But first - what the heck is passthrough compliance?
Passthrough compliance is a technical setting enabled by Spotify that allows for data (think download metrics and your dynamic ad content) to flow freely between Dovetail and Spotify.
Without passthrough compliance enabled, your feed will be cached by Spotify and will replay from that cached version. This means that no new dynamic content will reach your Spotify listeners and no Spotify download metrics will show up in Dovetail. For obvious reasons, this isn't exactly ideal.
Nor is it something you can enable through the Spotify for Podcasters dashboard directly, but there are two different methods for setting up passthrough compliance, depending on whether you’re -

Claiming a show that was previously submitted
Submitting a Show for the First Time
Any new show submitted by PRX on your behalf meets the criteria for being passthrough compliant. Once the show has been submitted and approved, it can be shared with your organization’s Spotify for Podcaster’s account so that you maintain access to all of Spotify’s proprietary data.
Step 1 - Sign up for a Spotify for Podcasters account with an email address of your choice.
Step 2 - Fill out this asana form to submit a Passthrough Request to PRX. You’ll need the following information handy.
- Show Name
- Public Feed URL
- Spotify for Podcasters Account Email
Once the request from you has been received, PRX Staff will submit the show to Spotify, making it eligible for passthrough compliance. Upon approval from Spotify you will see the show appear in your Spotify for Podcaster’s account, and your show should play without interference on the Spotify platform.
Claiming a Show that was Previously Submitted
For pre-existing shows that may have been available on Spotify for sometime, PRX will need to momentarily claim your feed under our account so that we can request passthrough compliance from Spotify directly.
Please submit the following form to send a passthrough compliance request to PRX. You’ll want the following information at hand:
- Show Name
- Public Feed URL
- Spotify for Podcasters Account Email
- Link to your show on Spotify
As part of our request, we’ll ensure the show data remains available in your S4P account.
Once we’ve claimed and our request for passthrough set-up has been processed, you’re set as a passthrough compliant show, and your show should play without interference on the Spotify platform.
