Networks 101

Basic Concepts of Networks

1. There are two websites you need to know about.  The first one is the one you will use the most.

  • networks.prx.org is where you do almost everything related to the network: adding items, downloading items, searching items, etc.  If you already have your username and you are on the staff list of your station account, go right ahead to networks.prx.org to log in with your PRX account and add or download an item.  
  • prx.org is where station admins add staff members to the station account and designate who gets notifications about new items on your network.

2. Each station has one or more admins who can add station staff to the station account and control email settings.  If you do not know who your admins are, contact prxhelp@prx.org, or you can view them from the Staff sidebar on the right of a PRX station profile.  Adding staff to a station account is what gets them access to the network at networks.prx.org.

3. Each person must have his/her own PRX account associated with the station where he/she works.  If a person is not sure if they have an account (this is very common), have him/her contact prxhelp@prx.org.  To create an account if you do not have one, go to prx.org and click “Sign up for an account!”

4. To add station staff to your station account, a station admin needs to do the following steps.

  1. Log into prx.org and click MY PRX on the right.
  2. Choose your station account from Choose Account.
  3. Scroll down to Manage Members.
  4. Search for staff via email, full name, or username.  Click “make member” to add him or her.  REMINDER: If a staffer does not have a PRX account, he/she must make one first before you can add him or her (see above).

5. To determine who at a station receives notifications about new items posted to the network, a station admin needs to do the following steps:

  1. Log into prx.org and click MY PRX on the right.
  2. Choose your station account from Choose Account.
  3. Scroll down to Email Settings.
  4. In Email Settings, scroll down to Network Piece Published.  Check/uncheck who you want, and click save.  You can also add email addresses to the box.  For example, newsroom@wxyz.org, if you want a whole newsroom to get something even if a person is not part of the network.

 6. The station “owner” of the network can add categories and types to your network and can see carriage reports for your network.
