Transcripts are essential tools to expand podcast accessibility and Dovetail now features transcript support for HTML, JSON, VTT, and SRT formats.
Here’s how to incorporate transcripts into your podcast on Dovetail:
Step 1: Log in at podcasts.dovetail.prx.org with your username and password.
Note: your username is not your email address. Alternately, you can log in at id.prx.org then select “Dovetail Podcasts” from the options on the left side of the screen.
Step 2: Select your podcast and then select “episodes” from the dashboard options.
Step 3: Select the episode you want to add a transcript to.
You can select a draft, scheduled, or a published episode.
Note: All changes to published episodes will be immediately pushed out after saving the changes. When they appear on other podcast apps depends on how often that app refreshes.
Step 4: Select “Transcript” from the options on the left.

Step 5: Upload the transcript file for your episode by dragging-and-dropping or selecting the transcript file from a drive.
Note: if your .json file includes time codes for captioning, then captions will be displayed whenever someone plays your podcast episode. Be sure to select the appropriate file format from the dropdown menu.
Step 6: Save your changes and you’re done! Your transcript will now be available to subscribers, depending on how their podcast app of choice integrates and incorporates the transcript data.
Special note: Apple Podcasts now automatically generates transcripts by default shortly after an episode is uploaded. (This does not include music lyrics.) This generated transcript can be downloaded. If you prefer Apple to use a transcript you provide (ie: a transcript that is in your RSS feed), you can select that option within Apple Podcast Connect.
