Dovetail Multifeeds (aka Subfeeds): FAQ

Key Terms:

Multifeeds aka Subfeeds: Referred to as "subfeeds" throughout this FAQ.

Main Feed: Your original public feed containing all episode content and dynamically inserted ads.

What is a Subfeed?

Subfeeds, technically called multifeeds, allow you to create additional, customizable versions of your main podcast feed. They’re ideal for subscription services like Apple Subscriptions, Supercast, Supporting Cast, and Patreon or limited run series- all while being managed alongside your main public RSS feed settings.

What Can I Use Subfeeds For?

Subfeeds offer several possibilities, including:

  • Bonus Content: Share exclusive episodes, behind-the-scenes moments, or extended interviews with your subscribers.
  • Content-Based Feeds: Organize content into themed series (e.g., your main feed is Radiotopia Presents, while a subfeed could be for the limited-run series Bot Love).
  • Subscriber-Only Feeds: Provide premium access through platforms like Apple Subscriptions, Supercast, and Supporting Cast. These can can include ad free feeds and bonus content.
  • Youtube: Create and submit an ad-free subfeed for Youtube distribution.

How Can I Create a Subfeed?

You can create subfeeds directly in Dovetail without needing assistance from the PRX Distribution team. Follow these guides to get started:

Can I Customize a Subfeed?

Yes, but there are limits. Here’s what you can customize at the podcast level on your subfeed:

  • Podcast Title
  • Windowing (useful for managing new episode releases)
  • Feed episode limit
  • Feed episode metadata
  • Episode description footer
  • Audio format
  • Ad zones
  • Teaser
  • Description
  • Apple Podcasts category/subcategory
  • Podcast series artwork
  • Feed Privacy/Authentication Tokens

Ads and Subfeeds

Can I have different ads on my subfeed?
No, the same ads from your main feed will play on your subfeed.

Can I have different ad placements on my subfeed?
No, ad placements are consistent with your main feed’s setup.

Episode-Level Customization

Can I change the episode title, artwork, or description for a subfeed?
No, customization is only available at the podcast level, not for individual episodes.

Can I change the season number for a subfeed?
No, season numbers are episode-level metadata and cannot be changed.

Submitting Subfeeds to Podcast Apps

Can I submit my subfeed to podcast apps?
Yes! When you create a subfeed on Dovetail, an RSS feed is generated. You can submit this feed to podcast apps for use as a standalone feed (e.g., a limited-run series) or as a subscription feed for services like Apple Podcasts, Supercast, and Supporting Cast, etc…

What happens when I search for a subfeed I submitted to apps?
When you search for your subfeed, you’ll see the subfeed’s episodes. However, you’ll also see the main feed, if subfeed episodes remain part of the main feed.

Metrics and Subfeeds

Can I view downloads specifically for my subfeed in Dovetail Metrics?
No, subfeed download metrics are combined with the downloads from your main feed.

Why Create a Subfeed Instead of a New Feed?

Better for Sales: Subfeeds maintain existing relationships with advertisers.

Better for Downloads: Downloads from subfeeds roll into your main feed, boosting your overall metrics.

Do Subfeeds Help with Marketing?

Yes! Subfeeds can give you an edge when promoting date-specific content. For example, Apple is more likely to feature a subfeed with Valentine’s Day-themed episodes than a regular feed with unrelated content.
