What exactly can I do with this?

As subscription options for podcast listeners become the new normal we wanted an easy way for you to create additional private feeds to share with those who support you directly through a subscription. These additional feeds will feature the same great content – but don’t have to include ads and offer secure authorization tokens for access.

Some possible use cases for this feature include:

  • Private and/or ad-free feed for subscriptions
  • Feeds created by categories
    • Bonus Episodes Only
    • Video Episodes Only
    • Specific Episode Topic or Mini-Series Only
  • Transcode audio into different file formats
    • FLAC
    • WAV
    • Mp3

How do I create a new version of my feed?

Step 1: Navigate to the podcast you'd like to create a new feed for, and click on the Feeds tab

Label A label to help you identify this feed while publishing episodes. Not publicly available.
Slug An alphanumeric slug used to identify your feed, also used in the private feed url. Helps to differentiate from your public feed.

Please note: If you'd like the feed to have a different title than your public feed - fill in the Override Title field.

Step 4: Next, check the relevant check boxes for your preferred distribution settings:

Private (unlisted)

If you would like your feed to be private check this box, then click Add Token to generate a private authorization token. This token must be appended to your feed URL for the audio to work. Removing the token is used to revoke access to your feed.

Imported Locked Having this checked will prevent your feed from being imported to other hosts.
Skip Default Feed Episodes If you would like this feed to NOT contain all of the same episodes as your default public feed or to NOT contain the entirety of your back catalog upon creation then check this box.

Step 5: Fill in additional sub-feed options as desired.

Audio Format

You can select the type of audio you want this feed to use. Audio that you upload to your episode will be transcoded to meet this standard.

Ad Zones to Include

De-select the ad zones you want to exclude from the feed. For example, for a an ad-free feed, it would look like this:

Overrides
This allows further differentiation of this feed from your public feed - give it a new teaser, description, or even a new category if you'd like!

Cover & Thumbnail Images

You can even give the feed a different image- though the same image requirements still stand (Minimum size: 1400 x 1400 px Maximum size: 3000 x 3000 px- and for the thumbnail, 300x300 pixels).

Step 6: Be sure and save your changes to generate your feed! This will cause a pubic feed url to generate which you can submit or share with platforms as needed.

Please keep in mind that there are nuances to using sub-feeds within Dovetail. Check out the sub-feed FAQ for more information.
